Goldfield Main Street Year in Review

Goldfield Main Street has had a bustling inaugural year. We established ourselves in February and successfully organized our debut event, the "Goldfield Thaw", in April. During the same month, Main Street collaborated with local 8th graders to refurbish the prominent "G" on Columbia mountain. Their commendable effort allowed them to fund a trip to Disneyland. In May, Goldfield Main Street submitted an application for a marketing grant from Travel Nevada. This encompassed financial support for a promotional video, a visitor brochure/map, and an advertisement in Certified's Southern Nevada Visitor Brochure. In June, Goldfield Main Street welcomed jewelry artist Sidney Martinez, who delivered a presentation at Goldfield High School. Our inaugural Town Hall meeting took place in July, providing a platform for gathering community input, which was then utilized to seek a grant from Nevada State Main Street. In addition to operating a refreshment stand in Colvin Town Square during Goldfield Days, August marked the launch of the Goldfield Gazette, made possible by the Nevada State Main Street grant. In October, Goldfield Main Street collaborated with the Goldfield Historic Society to organize the "Birthday Spooktakular". The day began with celebrations for Goldfield's Birthday, followed by pumpkin decorating, and a ghost walk through historic Goldfield buildings. Special thanks to Michael & Marie Sanders, Raley's, and Centerra Gold for their contributions! Our final event of the year was the free community Spaghetti Dinner, also funded by Centerra Gold. Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited about the recent approval from the county to allow Goldfield Main Street to enhance the Colvin Town Square when the spring weather returns! If you have found pleasure in the activities and events on Goldfield Main Street, kindly contemplate extending your support through donations to the organization or towards a particular project. Your donations are eligible for tax deductions and will secure the continuity of initiatives like the Goldfield Gazette once the existing grant funds are depleted.

Season of Giving

Its that time of the year!  Rather than giving to organizations/groups out of town, out of state, or out of the country, we ask that you please consider to supporting your own community first.  Support the Goldfield Historical Society who continue to make vital improvements to the Goldfield High School.  Support the Goldfield Volunteer Association who put on the annual Fourth of July activities, hosts the annual Community Thanksgiving Meal, and organize the Toys for Tots program.  Support Goldfield Main Street which hosts events and activities and also produces the Goldfield Gazette for the community free of charge.  Chamber? Grotto? Regardless of the amount, any help you can provide in the way of monetary or volunteer support will help support our little community in the middle of nowhere!

Here's just a small sampling of what we’ve accomplished and are working on.

Big "G” Project Helps Fund 8th Grade Trip

On April 27, 2024, four eighth grade students accompanied by their fearless teacher Mrs. Larsen and advisor Mrs. Abbott, ascended Columbia Mountain to paint the big “G”. It’s been a tradition for graduating 8th grade students to take a trip to Southern California amusement parks. But before they can go, they must first raise money by conducting various fundraisers throughout the year.

In addition to helping the students paint the big "G," Goldfield Main Street gave $100 to each student who showed up to help. The “Big G” project is one of Goldfield Main Street’s first community projects. These students definitely earned the money for their trip. Tramping up a steep rocky mountainside, while carrying a mop and buckets of lime wash was not easy!

Along with visiting amusement parks, Mrs. Larsen added an educational stop in Manzanar National Historic Site near Lone Pine. Manzanar is one of ten American concentration camps where more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II.

Goldfield Main Street hopes to make the Big G an annual project. It helps the community, while helping students reach their fundraising goals. This project can also be seen as a “rite of passage” for those headed to high school. Before they leave, they are literally leaving their mark on Goldfield! Special thanks to Patrick for allowing the community to paint the big G on Columbia Mountain!

Colvin Town Square

Update for November: Good News!  The Esmeralda County Commissioners voted on Tuesday, October 15 to allow Goldfield Main Street to move forward with town square improvements!  Work will begin according to the weather, with some of it needing to wait for the spring.

Great News! Based on input from the July 10 Town Hall meeting, Goldfield Main Street applied for grant funding for six projects. Nevada Main Street awarded three of them to include: 1. Covered seated area for the Town Square. 2. Fencing, trees, and trash cans for the Town Square. 3. Funding to produce the Goldfield Gazette monthly newsletter.
